Having been constituted by the then King Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma the current day’s Kerala State Road Transport Corporation had once remained the Travancore State Transport Department. It had been launched then with this aim to offer ultimate transportation service to the erstwhile state. It was on September 20, 1937 that the Assistant Operating Superintendent of London Passenger Transport Board E.G. Salter had been appointed as Superintendent of the newly launched Transport Department. This department grew faster over the period with the nationalization of several routes especially those in the Thiruvanathapuram–Kanyakumari and Palakkad–Coimbatore regions.

Imported from England its first fleet had 60 Comet chassis fitted buses having Perkins diesel engines. Travancore State Transport Department staff built bodies of such buses under the Superintendent’s supervision. Even the current operating staffs are following the same model which had been once selected in the region. With the nationalization of Thiruvanathapuram–Kanyakumari route many things changed hence Transport Department preferred recruitments on the basis of such options with an aim not to lose the private transport company jobs. By keeping in consideration many such factors the Transport Department started recruiting approximately hundred graduate staffs to join as Conductors and Inspectors in its team.

The then King Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma inaugurated the State Motor Service on 20 February 1938 for successful operation. Its inaugural trip was given green signal with the first passengers that comprised of king’s relatives as passengers for which the then Superintendent Salter drove the bus. It had once remained a major attraction as this bus including thirty-three other buses giving unique impression of driving on the road passing through the Kowdiar Square area and nearby places.

The Government of Kerala finally formulated the establishment of KSRTC once the Road Transport Corporation Act in 1950 was enacted under the KSRTC rules in 1965 under Section 44 of the law. It was in April 1, 1965 that Transport Department was made an autonomous corporation to work with maximum freedom. The formal establishment of Kerala State Road Transport Corporation was held by Kerala government under a notification issued on March 15, 1965 itself.

Registered under dedicated RTO at Thiruvanathapuram, KSRTC buses have KL-15 registration series.
